About Your Character:
Character: Neville Longbottom
Age: 18
Brief Physical Description: Neville is of middling height and build, with short dark-blond hair and green eyes. He’s not an impressive looking kid, but he’s got a shy and crooked smile some find endearing.
PB: Matthew Lewis
Brief Personality Description: Neville likes to play his cards close the vest. He’s a little bitter and doesn’t freely share himself with other people. In part this is from his upbringing and in part it is from his natural shyness, but he strives to appear aloof rather than cowardly. He seeks approval from others and is very gentle-natured, but reserved. He tries mostly to stay in the background of things, while also trying to do everything right and gain the praise and respect of those around him. It makes him more than a little socially awkward.
Neville is brave when it comes to facing physical danger, but he’s a little unsure of himself when it comes to other kinds of bravery. He’s highly suspicious by nature, even among those he considers friends.
Affiliation: Currently un-affiliated
Brief History: After Voldemort took over the MoM, it looked as if the Longbottom family would be one of the ones resisting him. Indeed, since Neville’s parents, Alice and Frank, were part of the old Order, that was true for a while. But one night when Neville was still very young, his parents were ‘arrested’ and supposedly sent to Azkaban as blood-traitors. No one from the family has heard any news of them since and Neville was raised by his very strong-willed grandmother, Augusta Longbottom.
After her son and daughter-in-law disappeared, Augusta decided to play things a little closer to the vest in the new regime. She raised Neville in what appeared to be a proper pureblood fashion, while also telling him about his parents and making it clear to her grandson where her real loyalties lay and what she expected of him. Neville wanted to make her proud, but was so late him coming to his magical ability that he felt he was always disappointing her, and his parents. But he did eventually show his magic and get accepted to Hogwarts and sorted into Gryffindor.
The Longbottoms, not just his grandmother, expected Neville to be another Frank, someone who could defy Voldemort and ‘save’ the family name, even while they themselves were too scared to. Neville had to work twice as hard as his classmates to keep afloat in his studies, except in Herbology. He was determined, but lacked the basic talent to get things done on his own and refused to seek help from others, unsure of their loyalties and paranoid from his upbringing. He had a few casual friends (tutors more than anything), plenty of bullies, and about an equal number of helpful and disparaging professors. But mostly he was pressured by his grandmother, the ghost of his parents, and the pervasive, fearful nature of the times he lived in. Especially carrying around the knowledge that his upstanding pureblood family was anything but, yet too timid to act on it. He graduated in the middle of his class. (Except, again, in Herbology.)
Neville lived with his grandmother over the last summer, but has moved to London to take a job in Diagon Alley in a horticulture shop and try and find his own way in things.
In a world were James Potter lived and Lily and Harry Potter died, where Voldemort rules from the Ministry, how do you see your character fitting? Neville is theoretically on the side of the Order, morally and vehemently against Voldemort, but not officially on the side of anything yet.
